In July 1996, Lin Russell and her two daughters, Josie and Megan, were walking home along a country lane near Chillenden in Kent when they were attacked. Lin and six-year-old Megan were killed, while nine-year-old Josie was left with devastating injuries but survived. The family dog was also killed. Police eventually arrested Michael Stone, who was convicted of the murders and attempted murder. He has always maintained his innocence and the case has remained controversial, particularly because there was no forensic evidence directly linking him to the scene. Over the years, questions have also been raised about whether serial killer Levi Bellfield could have been responsible, although he has never been charged with the Russell murders.
