In 1922, six people were murdered at a remote farmstead known as Hinterkaifeck in Bavaria, Germany. The victims included farmer Andreas Gruber, his wife, their widowed daughter, her two children and a newly arrived maid. In the days before the murders, Andreas reportedly noticed strange footprints in the snow leading from the forest towards the property, but none leading back. He also told neighbours that he had heard unusual noises in the attic and that objects had gone missing. After the murders, investigators found evidence suggesting the killer may have remained at the farm for some time, feeding the animals and possibly using the house while the victims lay undiscovered. Numerous suspects have been suggested over the years, but nobody has ever been conclusively identified as the killer.
