An extensive search is continuing for 5-year-old Sailor Hayes, who wandered away from her family’s rental home on Old Waccamaw Drive in the Hagley community of Pawleys Island, South Carolina, on Sunday.
Deputies, firefighters, divers, K9 teams, boats, aircraft and community volunteers have been searching the surrounding land, water and shoreline. Drones operated by the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office and Georgetown County Fire have also been conducting coordinated searches from the air.
Sailor was wearing a Project Lifesaver device when she disappeared. Authorities deployed equipment on the ground and aboard a Charleston County Sheriff’s Office helicopter for hours in an effort to detect a signal from the device.
Divers from Horry County examined approximately 200 yards underwater near the rental property where Sailor and her family were staying. Divers from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources are expected to continue searching underwater as needed.
The Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol and Midway Fire Rescue have been searching the water and shoreline, while Georgetown County Emergency Management continues assisting with the operation.
Deputies, boats and K9 teams will remain in the area throughout the night.
“We’re here until we find her,” Georgetown County Sheriff Carter Weaver said.
Sailor is nonverbal, but authorities say she may respond positively when spoken to calmly and slowly. Anyone who sees her or has information that could help locate her should call 911 immediately.
