Fred and Rose West are among the most notorious serial killers in British criminal history. Their crimes came to light in 1994 after police began searching their home at 25 Cromwell Street in Gloucester and discovered human remains buried at the property. Further searches uncovered the remains of several victims, while others were later found at locations connected to Fred West.
The victims were mainly young women and girls who had disappeared between the 1970s and 1980s. Among them were members of the West family, including Heather West and Charmaine West, as well as women who had lived at or visited the Cromwell Street house. The investigation eventually linked Fred West to twelve murders, while Rose West was charged with ten.
The investigation began to unravel the case after police focused on the disappearance of Fred and Rose’s daughter Heather. Fred had previously claimed that she had left home, but suspicions grew and police obtained a warrant to search the property in February 1994. Heather’s remains were found in the garden, and further discoveries followed as officers searched the house and other locations.
Fred West was charged with twelve murders but never stood trial. On 1 January 1995, while being held on remand at HM Prison Birmingham, he died by suicide.
Rose West went on trial at Winchester Crown Court in October 1995. She denied involvement in the murders, but after a seven-week trial the jury found her guilty of all ten murder charges. She received life sentences, with the judge indicating that she should never be released.
The house at 25 Cromwell Street became infamous because so many of the victims had been buried there. The property was eventually demolished in 1996, and the site was redeveloped rather than being allowed to become a place associated with the killers.
